In a heart-stopping finale that had fans on the edge of their seats, the Texas Chargers emerged victorious against the New York Warriors in the final of the inaugural US Masters T10 cricket tournament. After the main contest ended in a dramatic tie, it was the one-over eliminator that ultimately decided the fate of the championship.
The Texas Chargers had already displayed their mettle by competing in both the eliminator and the qualifier on Saturday, but their determination and stamina were unquestionable as they returned on Sunday to seize the coveted title.
The clash between the Chargers and the Warriors began with both teams posting identical scores of 92 runs in their allotted 10 overs. As the tension escalated, the contest required a Super Over to determine the ultimate winner.
The pivotal Super Over showdown featured the duel between the two Sohails – Tanvir and Khan. First, it was Sohail Khan who showcased his remarkable skills, holding the Texas Chargers to a challenging total of 15 runs. Mukhtar Ahmed’s last-ball six was a crucial contribution in this phase. Then, it was Sohail Tanvir’s turn to shine, as he stepped up and restricted the New York Warriors to just 13 runs, despite a last-ball six from Jonathan Carter.
Sohail Khan emerged as the catalyst for the thrilling tie-breaker scenario. During the ninth over of the Chargers’ innings, Khan delivered a stunning performance, claiming four key wickets in a mesmerizing four-ball burst. His relentless assault dismissed Upul Tharanga, Phil Mustard, Thisara Perera, and Neil Broom, turning the game on its head. Shahid Afridi’s valuable contribution in the last over, which included the dismissals of Sohail Tanvir and Fidel Edwards, was instrumental in forcing the tie.
The Texas Chargers’ innings were anchored by Mohammad Hafeez, who continued his exceptional form, amassing 46 runs off just 17 balls. Ben Dunk provided crucial support with a brisk 20 runs off 12 balls, as the two constructed a pivotal 46-run partnership for the second wicket.
The New York Warriors faced a challenging task in their innings, struggling to build momentum against the Chargers’ formidable bowling attack. Fidel Edwards made a fiery start by dismissing Kamran Akmal with the very first delivery of the match. Although Richard Levi and Tillakaratne Dilshan contributed a 30-run partnership, Ehsan Adil’s remarkable two-over spell of 3 for 11 halted the Warriors’ progress.
Jonathan Carter exhibited a valiant effort, smashing three sixes and three fours on his way to an unbeaten 39 off 17 balls. Sohail Khan’s crucial contributions further kept the Warriors’ hopes alive, but their combined efforts fell short in the end.
Sohail Khan’s outstanding performance earned him the well-deserved Player-of-the-Match award for the final, while Mohammad Hafeez’s consistent excellence throughout the tournament earned him the Player-of-the-Tournament honor.
