A spirited and determined teenager, Virat Kohli burst onto the scene as a young leader, propelling India to victory in the Under-19 World Cup in early 2008. Amidst a team adorned with revered figures, Kohli’s distinct ‘bad-boy’ intensity set him apart, making him somewhat of an outlier.
Emerging from the Shadows
In August 2008, he graduated to the senior Indian cricket team during a series in Sri Lanka. With the absence of regular openers, Kohli was given the opportunity to open the batting in ODIs. His performances were notable, contributing to India’s victory in the series. However, the established pair of Tendulkar and Sehwag continued to hold precedence, keeping Kohli out of the team.
His brilliance shone through for Delhi, consistently dominating opposition attacks, underscoring his readiness for a higher level. In 2009, he ventured to Australia for the Emerging Players tournament, where he displayed his prowess against the bowlers. His hundred in the final against South Africa showcased his big-match temperament. He ended the tournament with 398 runs, leaving a lasting impression on the selectors.
Solidifying His Place
Given another chance by the selectors, Kohli started amassing impressive scores in ODIs. He repaid their trust with his maiden ODI century against Sri Lanka in December 2009, the first of many memorable knocks in run-chases. His partnership with Gautam Gambhir in the 2011 World Cup final laid the foundation for India’s victory. His consistent performances in limited-overs cricket led to numerous records, including being the fastest to achieve multiples of a thousand runs and winning the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year award in 2012.
Mastering His Craft
Kohli’s playing style reflected his aggression and intensity, channeled effectively into his batting. He exhibited a unique but effective technique, enabling him to judge the ball’s length early and display swift wrists against both pace and spin. His ability to adapt to different formats was evident, making him a formidable batsman.
A Captain’s Journey
As a captain, Kohli led India to significant victories and maintained their ranking as the number one Test side for multiple years. However, his captaincy was not without its ups and downs, marked by controversies and challenges. He triumphed in Australia as a captain, leading India to a Test series win in 2018-19, a historic achievement.
The Lasting Impression
In his IPL journey with Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kohli’s loyalty and growth were evident. From a struggling start, he evolved into the leading run-scorer in IPL history. Despite his monumental performances, an IPL title remained elusive for him and his team.
A Legacy in the Making
Throughout his career, Kohli proved his mettle and silenced critics with his consistent performances. His journey from a fiery teenager to a cricketing superstar highlighted his unwavering dedication and thirst for excellence. The defining moment of his career was the remarkable innings in the CB series, a testament to his ability to elevate his team in dire situations. As of now, he continues to set new benchmarks, leaving an indelible mark on the sport.
